In this situation our interactions feel less scripted and more ad-libbed, and I feel so much more like an equally invested — and involved! Lesbians and gay men, this angry bisexual is tired of being your afterthought. From a young age, I was drawn to your transgressive sexuality and gender expression, your courage to be yourselves in the face of oppression, your fabulous rainbows and your sensible shoes. Our youth face more bullying and harassment and higher risk of suicide than their gay and lesbian peers do, and we all have less social support. You broke my heart too many times.
I have personally seen this in action several times, as many polyamorous men have been all too excited for me to date their wife or girlfriend, only to suddenly refuse when I disclose that I am transgender. Consider that I was not socialized as a woman from birth; I never learned to expect the heteronormative tropes of romance and showing attraction. Both parties then go their separate ways, bemoaning what seems like a lost cause. But they make me feel wanted and desired in a way that very few women ever do. Particularly, in this instance, because the pressure to be more inclusive falls to gay women far more than any other marginalized group. Is it any wonder that they may feel angry or frustrated upon experiencing even slightly similar pressures in a supposed safe space? In this situation our interactions feel less scripted and more ad-libbed, and I feel so much more like an equally invested — and involved! But is this really because we prefer a life of white-picket simplicity and comfort? I knew the time was coming when bisexuals, queers, transgender people, people of color, undocumented and other marginalized groups within the LGBTQ community would be asked to once again push aside our needs, close ranks with white cis gays and lesbians, and overlook our differences — you know, for the sake of preserving marriage equality. And while the sheer number of available partners may explain some aspect of why bi women partner more frequently with men, the heteronormative socialization described above is almost certainly as responsible, if not more so, for this phenomenon. Lost In Translation My experiences with dating, both before and after transitioning, have magnified the differences in how courtship and sexual pursuit are modeled for both genders. Our youth face more bullying and harassment and higher risk of suicide than their gay and lesbian peers do, and we all have less social support. Until bisexuals find equitable representations of their organizations in litigator roundtables, national and state policy roundtables, legal policy teams, national and state transgender policy roundtables, rapid response communications groups or faith working groups, we should protest our exclusion. I knew going in that, like any large movement organization, they had a rocky past with both trans and bi communities, and a tendency toward centrist politics. And I sincerely thought if I just kept fighting for you, for all of us, that I would prove myself worthy of your love and acceptance. You have shown me time and again that you are not here for me or my community. I spent the first two decades of my life living as a closeted trans woman — a bisexual male to the outside world. The staff who identified as bisexual were rarely empowered or allowed to do bi-specific programmatic work, if they were even out to their gay and lesbian colleagues. Bi women are actually straight, and bi men are actually gay. As a result, is it really so hard to see why some gay women might feel wary or reluctant to begin a relationship with a bisexual woman? Bi women cheat, betray, and ultimately leave — never for another woman, but for a man. For instance, accusations of deceit are leveled at bi women as well as bi men, ostensibly insulting both groups equally: And while some in the lesbian community have certainly expressed unreasonable prejudices towards bisexual women as a group, I would challenge us not to automatically claim biphobia in response, but to focus instead on rethinking what it means to both perform and receive romance. I have since transitioned, and now live as a bisexual woman. You broke my heart too many times. From a young age, I was drawn to your transgressive sexuality and gender expression, your courage to be yourselves in the face of oppression, your fabulous rainbows and your sensible shoes.
